Mayan Ruins

The Mayan ruins are definitely Tulums most popular tourist attraction. The history of Mayan culture has been preserved in these ruins so tourists can now visit. There is so much information around the ruins written on boards and sites and views are spectacular. I manage to visit 7 Mayan Ruins during my stay in Tulum. Including, Tulum Ruins, Chichen Itza (one of the 6 wonders of the world), Coba, Xel-Ha, Muyil and Ek Balam. You can hire a guided tour at any of these Mayan Ruins. I strongly recommend doing this! Not only will you get a great amount of information on the history of the Mayans. But you will often gain personal insights and get answers to any of the questions you may have.

Cenotes

The beautiful freshwater Cenotes were my favourite thing to visit. A Cenote is a freshwater natural pool that is created by the collapse of limestone bedrock. It felt like a whole secret world of hidden pools and the sparkling light blue gave a magical feel. There are many Cenotes to visit in Tulum. But I’d strongly recommend Gran Cenote, Zacil-Ha, Dos Ojos, Sac Actun, El Pit and Nicte-Ha. I’ve chosen these because they were the most natural and breathtaking. All of these Cenotes were surrounded by hanging plants which made them even more aesthetically pleasing. There’s only one rule- shower before! This is to protect the small fishes and sea plants.

The main bit of advice I must give though is to avoid the tours. The Cenotes that the tours will take you to are no way near as magnificent as the ones I’ve named. Also, often tours rush you and you only get a certain time limit (usually not long) before the coach leaves for the next destination. So if you want to see the most popular, natural and breathtaking Cenotes I’d suggest arranging transport and planning to go by yourself. Trust me, once you get there you’ll want the time to relax and take the beauty and tranquillity all in.

Beaches

There are so many beaches to explore in Tulum. I visited 10 beaches in total and each and everyone was beautiful. My top 5 (in order) was Playa Paraíso, Playa Ruinas, Akumal Beach, Las Palmas Public Beach and Secret Beach. So take your pick out of these beautiful beaches where you can relax and unwind. And spend a day soaking up the sun and enjoy a dip into the Caribbean sea. There are so many activities on offer at all of these beaches I visited. Such as banana boats, jet skiing, windsurfing, scuba diving and more. And if you fancy a cocktail, don’t worry! You will find many cocktail makers walking around offering mojitos, Pina Coladas, Long Island Iced Teas, Margaritas, you name it.

Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world. So you have to give this a visit! It features astonishing 160 floors and stands at 828 metres (if you’re afraid of heights, I’d give it a miss). The views are absolutely incredible. From the top floors, you will overlook the whole city and it’s extremely impressive seeing the whole of Dubai from up high. Especially at night time when all the buildings are lit up. It’s probably Dubai’s most iconic landmark and is definitely one to tick off the bucket list.

The Dubai Fountain

I visited the Dubai Fountain one evening and had the most incredible experience. This fountain is the tallest performing fountains in the world (it shoots water up to 600 feet). The fountain shows are so captivating and special and you can really feel the magic of Dubai. Each performance is fantastically choreographed to different musical tracks. The shows take place regularly and will last for 3+hours. I would strongly recommend visiting in the evening. So you can enjoy the magic of the nighttime lights and the light show in the background on the Burj.

Dubai Red Tunes Tour

This was my most memorable experience in Dubai. I strongly recommend anyone to take this tour for an action-packed and fun-filled day. You’ll be taken to the desert for 6 hours of entertainment. First, you will stop off at the desert dunes to explore. You’ll be given the opportunity to ride a quad bike across the dunes (don’t worry an instructor will show you how). Once you’ve practised your skills, the instructor will offer to take you to a more hilly part of the dunes. So, if you’re feeling adventurous and like challenging yourself – this tour is for you! The views in the desert are incredible, especially if you stick around for sunset.

Ski Dubai

This might not be to everyone’s taste but I absolutely love skiing. Dubai is an extremely hot country and it can sometimes get unbearable. So, for anyone looking for a little break from the sun, head over to Ski Dubai. It’s located in the Dubai Mall of the Emirates and is the 3rd largest indoor ski slope in the world. It’s so realistic and even features an indoor stairlift. Who said you can’t have snow and sun in the same place? There will be many qualified ski instructors to help you perfect your skills on the slope.

Uluwatu

Uluwatu is unquestionably my no.1 favourite town to visit in Bali. I originally planned to stay here for 2 weeks but fell in love. I ended up cancelling my second stay in Ubud and stayed in Uluwatu for a whole month. This gave me the time I needed to discover all of the hidden gems this place had to offer (there’s a lot). It is by far the most extraordinary town in terms of surf spots, beaches and scenery. Uluwatu is home to the best beaches and best surf spots in Bali. Such as Padang Padang (also called Thomas beach), Dreamland, Bingin Beach, Nusa Dua, Nyang Nyang and Suluban. I spent most of my days soaking up the sun and surfing on these beautiful beaches. You’ll find the Bali you imagined here as the scenery still look untouched. Unfortunately, many places in Bali are spoilt by pollution. But you don’t find this in Uluwatu. Many people don’t know this, but this is due to the hard-working locals who protect and keep the beaches clean. They operate beach cleans every morning when the sunrises to ensure the beaches are rubbish free. It’s important to locals to keep these beaches preserved because these beaches bring in the most tourists.

Uluwatu doesn’t just offer a combination of laid-back surfing vibes and beautiful beaches, there’s so much more. You will find some of the most aesthetically pleasing and luxurious villas, hotels and resorts in Uluwatu. And accommodation is so cheap here you won’t believe it’s real! You will also stumble across so many different types of restaurants. And can pretty much find any type of food you fancy here, so you will not go hungry in Uluwatu, that’s for sure. It’s also an incredible place to spending your evenings dancing away whilst watching the sunset. There are many different places you can do this, such as Single Finn, Ulu Cliffhouse, OMNIA, El Kabron Cliff Club and so many more. All these places also offer many different djs and events. There’s one thing for sure, you’ll never get bored of Uluwatu.

Canggu

Canggu was the first place I visited when I landed in Bali. I choose here because it was supposedly the next best town closest to the airport. Also, I wasn’t the best surfer (i know surprising when I grew up in Cornwall) and there was no reef in Canggu. This meant it was the safest place for me to practice and there were lots of beginner lessons taking place on the beaches. So I would definitely recommend it as the first stop if you’re a beginner surfer! There are consistent and neat waves almost every single day so it’s a great way to ease yourself in.

My favourite thing about Canggu had to be the restaurants. No matter what food tickles your fancy, you’ll find it in Canggu. Not only does it have many traditional authentic Indonesian restaurants but it’s also become very westernised now. So whether it’s Italian, Mexican, Spanish, Indian, Vegetarian, Korean, Caribbean, Vegan or any other cuisine, you’ll find what you’re looking for. Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day and the breakfasts here were out of this world. My favourites were The Avocodo factory, Ruko Cafe, Rise & Shine. I became loyal to these breakfast restaurants and ate at either one of them every single day whilst I was in Canggu. Whether you fancy a smoothie bowl, banana pancakes or eggs, salmon and avo. They’ve got it and so much more!

Lastly, Canggu is full of the coolest bars and nightlife. I had so much fun here! My favourite bars to visit were Old Man’s, La Brisa, Pretty Poison, Deus Ex Machina, Lacalita, Finns Beach Club and The Black Cat. All of these bars would hold weekly events and almost always had a different DJ playing each night. They were the perfect places to let your hair down, drink some Bintangs and watch the sunset with friends. Or party too early hours of the morning of course.

Favourite places to visit in Barcelona

Las Ramblas

Las Ramblas is the most famous street in Barcelona and for good reason. It runs through the heart of the city and is filled with the lively atmosphere and action of Barcelona. The street goes on for 1.2 km and you’ll find many restaurants with traditional Spanish tapas, markets with various homemade items and lots of hotels. You’ll even find art on Las Ramblas. As the famous Spanish painter, Joan Micro actually created part of the Ramblas ( look out for the circle which features a large and colourful circular mosaic). The street undoubtedly possesses its own distinct character which is why it attracts thousands of tourists every year. As the Spanish poet, Federico García Lorca once said it’s “the only street in the world which I wish would never end” and I can definitely agree. You can spend a whole day and evening here and keep yourself entertained.

Barceloneta Beach

Barceloneta Beach is unquestionably the most popular beach in Barcelona. On an average summer day, it’s actually difficult to even see the sand. I understand that that’s not everyone first request when finding a beach, but somehow it adds to the overall lively, fun and exciting atmosphere. The surrounding area from the beach has something to offer everyone. From a huge selection of bars, restaurants of all cuisines, outdoor gym areas, volleyball nets and so much more. And with a spectacular view of the most famous hotel in Barcelona, the W. A hotel that has a magnificent design. And of course, the sea! This is my favourite place to hang out during the summer.

Gothic Quarter

You can’t come to Barcelona and not visit the Gothic Quater. This place is full of history and architecture. It has many traditional Catalan restaurants, medieval streets, stylish bars and clubs and many other charms. You will also find many flower stalls and street markets selling food, drinks and homemade gifts. This place is incredibly picturesque. It features old cathedrals but also modern twists.

Park Guell

Park Guell is a public park that’s open to visitors. It celebrates the life of the well-known and famous Catalan artist, Guadi. It acts as a reflection of his, free-flowing, colourful and buoyant artwork. Everything you see is unique which gives this park a special ambience. And the best part? the incredible and breathtaking views over the whole of the city (especially at night). You’ll have to take a lot of stairs to get to the best viewpoint, but you won’t regret it. The architecture of the buildings is unique and you’ll be surrounded by big green palms (there’s always parrots sitting in them). It costs 10€ to access but it’s extremely worth it. You will leave with even more love of Barcelona city than you already had.

Montjuic

Montjuïc is a hill in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. I strongly recommend taking a cable car right to the top and enjoy a ride across the city and the specular views it offers. Or if you fancy a hike, the walk is fun too. You can visit the cactus garden and take a beverage at one of the bars. Or visit the Olympic pool which is open to the public and overlooks the whole city. Or even immerse in some history at Montjuic castle!

Enjoying different restaurants is without a doubt one of my favourite things to do in London. Yes, I am a passionate foodie. I could write a whole 10,000-page book on recommendations of restaurants in London. A great abundance of restaurants would be an understatement! So, instead, I’ll tell you about my top 3 favourite restaurants and why.

Sexy Fish, Mayfair

Sexy Fish is situated in Mayfair, an affluent place in the West End of London. Mayfair holds a prestigious status and is home to the finest cuisine, properties and high-end shops. This is probably why it’s so expensive on monopoly. This restaurant features an extensive Asian cuisine menu which is guaranteed to impress. With raw-bar items, grilled fishes and much more. The variety of drinks is very impressive too! With the biggest selection of whiskeys in the whole of London.

It’s not just guaranteed to delight tastebuds, but the eyes too. The interior features a classy yet swanky art-filled decor. The ambience is amazing as it presents a refreshing, contemporary and exciting atmosphere. It’s not cheap, but I promise you, it’s worth it!

Sexy Fish hold many different events. They often have performers, such as dancers or DJ’s. So you can enjoy first-class entertainment whilst sipping on cocktails and enjoying the best Asian dishes in Mayfair. Lot’s of people dine here then spent the evening enjoying the vibe and music. It’s hard not to have a good night when visiting Sexy Fish.

Olives and Meze, Soho

Olives and Meze are situated in Soho, a fashionable and trendy place in West End London. It’s easily my no.1 place to go for healthy food. This restaurant is a Mediterranean cuisine dream with a modern twist. It offers an extensive menu will with traditional but also contemporary flavours. They offer a great selection of plant-based foods, vegetarian dishes, gluten-free dishes and are always happy to custom their dishes to your dietary requirements.

Every single dish I’ve tried at Olives and Meze was so out of this world. And the best part? all of their dishes are made from fresh ingredients and made to order. All dishes are made with the finest ingredients and diverse flavours that will leave you wanting more. It’s definitely a healthy alternative to dining out, but don’t think this will mean you’ll go away unsatisfied. It’s quite the opposite actually. You’ll walk away from this restaurant feeling great – good food, good mood. Everyone needs to try this place, you will not regret it!

Just minutes from liveliness at the Borough Market is Padella. Italian is without a doubt my favourite cuisines and Padella more than satisfied my deep love for pasta and pizza.

It features an open kitchen. So you can see the freshly made dough being rolled and the handmade pasta enters the food processor. All ingredients used are fresh and of the highest quality. I did find it a struggle when first moving to London to find an authentic Italian. But Padella is the closest to an authentic Italian that you’re going to get! It’s fresh, tasty and affordable. An Italian gem that I was grateful I stumbled across.

I grew up in Cornwall, United Kingdom, surrounded by beautiful beaches, countryside and a tight-knit community. I am grateful that my childhood was in such a picturesque and serene county. However, I lived in a very small town and naturally became restless to break free and experience new places and people. Needless to say, living with my parents and still deep in education, I’d have to wait until I was 18. It was inevitable that my travelling dreams would have to be put on pause. By the time I hit 18 I had started to feel slightly claustrophobic. I couldn’t understand how people wanted to stay in the same small town their whole lives. A lot of people had this mindset where I was from. It’s very comfortable there, everyone knows everyone and you feel safe and secure, but i wanted more.

Cornwall felt completed to some extent and it was time to move on. I love meeting new people from all over the world, seeing new places and creating experiences. I wanted to discover what the world had to offer. So, I made the decision to go to university in London, and off I went. These were 3 of the best years of my life. London is lively, vibrant and cosmopolitan. It had everything I wanted in a city. This city had so much to offer and the city life suited my outgoing personality. I quickly fell in love with London life. In fact, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever want to leave or live anywhere else.

Of course, like everywhere in the UK, it can get very cold. And if there’s anything I’ve realised about myself whilst growing up, it’s that I am a sun-worshipper. I feel like a complete version of me when the suns beating down on my face. I always feel positive and my best self when the suns out. They do say that exposure to sunlight increases the brains release of serotonin. So, automatically my mood is boosted when it’s summertime. Summer in London was incredible, there are so much to do and so many places to see. But the winters were very cold and rainy. And it made me think about moving to a warmer climate (see my page on my decision to move to Barcelona).

I was now a legal adult and could do whatever I wished (well, what my funds allowed me to do). It was time to make a list of every place I want to see in the world (it was a very very long list). I decided that I would get a part-time job alongside the university and start adding to my travel funds.

What will this blog be about?

I decided to write this blog initially for myself. I wanted to remember all of the adventures I had, the people I encountered and the places I had seen. Not only does this blog help me reflect on all of my experiences but it’s also a great way to reminisce. And a great guide to anyone who’s planning to visit these countries. I’ll explain what I enjoyed most, what to avoid and other general and (hopefully) helpful tips. I hope to continue to explore the world and write about my experiences here. And I hope my passion for travel can help someone out there.

Of course, I had thousands of photographs. But I realised that sometimes written word can evoke emotions and trigger memories in a way that a photograph can’t. So why not combine both into one blog? The purpose of sharing this travel blog with the public is to help fellow wanderlusts! Reading other travel blogs before visiting a country helped me in so many ways. I learnt things about these places that I couldn’t anywhere else. Sometimes it was just silly things, like hacks of the roads and secret shortcuts in Bali, but these things all helped to mould my experience (and saved me time working it out for myself). I love the travel community. It’s inspiring to read others experiences and record your own memories too. It’s like a history book on your life.
